Collanmore Island, Island in Kilmeena, Ireland
Collanmore Island is a private island in Clew Bay, close to Westport in County Mayo. It sits among dozens of smaller islands and faces Croagh Patrick, a well-known mountain on the mainland.
The island was once used for farming and fishing, and the old stone walls still visible across the land are traces of that earlier way of life. Over time it shifted away from agricultural use and became a private retreat.
The island can only be reached by boat from Rosmoney Pier, near Westport, with a crossing that takes around 12 minutes. Visits are generally reserved for guests staying at the lodge, so it is worth planning ahead before making the trip.
Clew Bay is said to have as many islands as days in the year, and Collanmore is one of the larger ones among them. Just nearby, the 19th-century Inis Gort Lighthouse is home to a seal colony that visitors can spot from the water.
