Taghadoe

Taghadoe is a monastery ruin in County Kildare, consisting of stone structures including a round tower that shows how early medieval Irish builders worked. The remains date from a period when such places served as centers of spiritual and community life.

A religious community was founded here in the 6th century and remained active for several hundred years until it was abandoned in the 17th century. This long period of use shows how important the place remained for religious life across generations.

The graveyard here holds burials from the 17th and 18th centuries, showing how Catholic faith was practiced and how important this place remained for the local community.

The site is located about 5 kilometers from Maynooth and is easily accessible, but there are no facilities or food options available. Visitors should bring their own refreshments and check ground conditions before visiting.

The round tower was designated as a national monument in 1886 and is managed by the Irish Office of Public Works. This early recognition shows how valued this structure is for Irish architectural history.
