Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Third level educational body in western Ireland
The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology was a higher education institution in the west of Ireland with five campuses, offering courses in fields such as engineering, science, business, nursing, agriculture, and design. The main campus was in Galway city, with other locations in Castlebar, Letterfrack, and Mountbellew, each focusing on different subject areas.
The institution opened in 1973 as the Regional Technical College Galway, with a focus on practical and technical training. In 2022, it merged with other colleges in western Ireland to form the Atlantic Technological University.
The Centre for Creative Arts and Media was housed in a former monastery in Letterfrack, giving students of art, design, and film a very unusual place to study and work. The old stone buildings and surrounding landscape became part of daily life for those on that campus.
Each campus had its own focus, so it is worth checking in advance which site covers the subject or facility you are looking for. The Galway city campus is the easiest to reach by public transport, while the other locations are in more rural settings and may require a car.
The Letterfrack campus was officially recognized by the Irish government as a National Centre of Excellence in furniture design and craftsmanship, making it one of the few places in Ireland where this trade is taught at a higher education level. This gives the campus a role that goes well beyond a typical college site.
