Eagle Island lighthouses, Twin lighthouses in County Mayo, Ireland
Eagle Island lighthouses are two stone structures built on a remote island off the coast of County Mayo, with one tower still standing at 11 meters tall. The complex served mariners navigating through treacherous waters and remained staffed by keepers for many decades before becoming automated.
The first lighthouse was built in 1835 following concerns from the Coastguard about dangerous maritime conditions in the area. Operations by lighthouse keepers continued for over 150 years until automation took over in the final decades of the 20th century.
The lighthouses represent the dedication of Irish lighthouse keepers who maintained these structures until 1988, when automated systems replaced manual operations.
The island is difficult to reach and visiting requires advance coordination with local authorities, as the site remains an active navigation station. Expect challenging weather conditions and limited access throughout the year.
On January 17, 1836, a powerful storm launched a rock that shattered the lighthouse window 27 meters above sea level.
