A pub has stood on this corner of Dame Court and Dame Lane since 1770, when Mr. Tyson built the original house. The premises were extensively rebuilt in 1895, giving the pub the Victorian interior it retains. Tyson's name and initials survive on the old clock and on the exterior wrought iron, and he is believed to have helped establish a permanent pavement over Dame Lane.

The pub has served as a filming location for various productions, including the British film Educating Rita with Michael Caine and the television series Penny Dreadful. This association with cinema has made it a recognized meeting spot for artists and visitors interested in Dublin's cultural scene.
