Kindlestown Castle

Kindlestown Castle is a medieval stone fortification in Delgany featuring substantial walls and a compact layout typical of the period. The structure displays narrow openings for arrows and barrel-vaulted spaces on its lower level.

The castle was built in the late 13th century by Albert de Kenley following his marriage to Joan, widow of a local ruler. The structure emerged as part of the Anglo-Norman push to establish control over Irish territories during this period.

The structure represents a rare example of Irish hall house architecture, demonstrating the medieval building practices and defensive requirements of its time.

The ruin sits on a hillside west of Greystones and is surrounded by open ground that allows visiting at any time. The terrain can become slippery after rain, so appropriate footwear and caution are recommended.

The castle walls contain arrow-slit windows and remnants of a slated parapet, with a small projecting tower and barrel vault at ground level.
