Powerscourt Waterfall, Natural cascade in County Wicklow, Ireland.
Powerscourt Waterfall is a cascade in County Wicklow that drops 121 meters into the Glensoulan valley. The water flows through the River Dargle, beginning its journey from springs on Tonduff mountain's slopes.
The site became the focus of an ambitious plan in 1821 when Viscount Powerscourt attempted to dam it for a royal visit. The effort ended in disaster when the held-back water was released, destroying a bridge in the process.
The location has served as a filming site for several productions, including the medieval fantasy film Excalibur and the television series Vikings. Visitors walk through the same landscapes that appeared in these well-known works.
The site is accessible via well-maintained trails, though the terrain is hilly and requires some physical effort. Visit during dry weather to avoid slippery paths and better enjoy the surroundings.
The grounds are home to Japanese Sika deer that have roamed the area since their introduction in the 1800s by a former Viscount. These animals move freely through the valley and add an unexpected element to the landscape.
