Sodom, Biblical ancient city near Dead Sea, Israel.
Sodom is an archaeological site in the Southern District of Israel that spreads across dry terrain not far from the Dead Sea. The remains show walls, foundations and artifacts that testify to an early urban settlement in this region.
The settlement may have existed until around 1700 BCE when sudden destruction ended urban life. Geological traces point to a catastrophic event that wiped out everything within moments.
The name Sodom appears in religious texts across different traditions and connects the location to moral narratives passed down through thousands of years. Visitors today see ruins and excavation sites that offer insight into the life of an early urban community on the edge of the desert.
Tours often start early in the morning because desert heat increases sharply during the day. Good walking shoes and plenty of water help when exploring the excavations on uneven ground.
In the excavation layers researchers found tiny glass beads and melted pottery pointing to temperatures above 2000 degrees Celsius. These findings do not match typical traces of fires or conquests from the Bronze Age.
