Russian Compound in Jerusalem, Orthodox compound in central Jerusalem, Israel

The Russian Compound spans 18.5 acres and contains the Holy Trinity Cathedral, religious mission buildings, a former consulate, and multiple stone structures.

Built between 1860 and 1864, the compound served as accommodation for thousands of Russian pilgrims who traveled annually to Jerusalem before World War I.

The Holy Trinity Cathedral features Byzantine architectural elements, with blue interior walls decorated with religious paintings and traditional Orthodox Christian symbols.

The complex now houses Israeli government offices, including courts, police headquarters, and the Jerusalem municipality, while maintaining its religious function.

Archaeological excavations within the compound revealed ancient structures connected to the Roman period of Jerusalem's history beneath the 19th-century buildings.
