Какун, Medieval fortress near Netanya, Israel
The Qaqun fortress stands on a hill with walls reaching 3 meters in thickness and dimensions of 14.5 by 17.5 meters at its base.
Built in 1123 as a defensive structure on the road from Caesarea to Shechem, the fortress fell to Sultan Baibars in 1260 after Templar occupation.
The archaeological remains contain artifacts from the Roman period settlement, indicating continuous human presence in this strategic location through different civilizations.
Located 15 kilometers from Netanya and 3 kilometers from Utopia Park, the fortress remains partially preserved and open for historical exploration.
Prince Edward of England attempted to recapture this fortress in 1271, and later Napoleon Bonaparte fought a successful battle against Turkish forces here.
