Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar is the capital of Gujarat state and sits on the Sabarmati River banks with thirty sectors around the government district. Streets follow a grid where wide avenues run between residential areas and administrative buildings.

The planned city arose from 1965 as Gujarat's new capital after the state was divided. Architects H. K. Mewada and Prakash M. Apte designed the layout with inspiration from Indian values and traditional urban planning.

The name honors Mahatma Gandhi and appears in public gardens where families walk under trees on weekends. Temples stand along streets beside modern office buildings and connect religious practice with daily life for residents.

Streets carry numbers and cross roads use Gujarati alphabet names, which makes finding places easier. Visitors find parks in each sector and can walk between districts on well-built paths.

More than half of the urban area consists of green spaces with trees along every main street. Planning from the start focused on vegetation and made the city an example of urban greening in India.
