Lower Ghaghri Falls, Cascading waterfall in Latehar district, India.
Lower Ghaghri Falls is a waterfall in Latehar district, Jharkhand, fed by the Ghaghri River as it drops over rocky ledges into dense forest below. The water flows year-round and collects in a rocky pool surrounded by trees and undergrowth on all sides.
The falls were shaped over generations by the flow of the Ghaghri River and long served as a natural landmark in this forested part of central India. Latehar became a separate district in 2001, which brought the area under a new administrative structure without changing its natural features.
Local communities visit the falls during certain festivals to hold ceremonies near the water, giving the site a meaning that goes beyond its natural character. The surrounding forest is seen by nearby communities as part of this sacred space.
The falls are accessible from Netarhat via a forest path that can be steep and uneven, so sturdy footwear is strongly advised. The ground near the pool gets slippery after rain, so extra care is needed on the final approach.
Lower Ghaghri Falls sits directly below Upper Ghaghri Falls on the same river, making it possible to visit both on a single outing. Despite their proximity, the two falls feel quite different from each other, as the lower one sits deeper in the forest and receives far less direct light.
