Ghughua Fossil Park, Fossil research park in Shahpura, India
Ghughua Fossil Park is a research area spanning more than 70 hectares in the Shahpura region of Madhya Pradesh, where remains of plants from different families have been uncovered. The site displays various types of fossils that allow researchers to trace how plant life evolved over extended periods.
The site was discovered and developed in the 1970s by a local researcher who systematically uncovered fossils and documented their age. Official recognition followed a few years later, establishing it as a protected research location.
The park serves as a working research center where scientists and students from across India come to examine fossilized remains directly in the field. Visitors can walk among evidence of ancient plant life and understand how the landscape has changed over millions of years.
The park is located roughly 75 kilometers from Jabalpur city and can be reached via National Highway 11, with the nearest major airport also in Jabalpur. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and plan visits during drier months when the paths are more accessible.
Within the park sits a petrified wood specimen resembling eucalyptus that may be among the oldest known examples of its kind. The site has also yielded a preserved dinosaur egg, offering further insight into the animal life of the past.
