Dassam Falls, Waterfall in Ranchi district, India

Dassam Falls is a waterfall near Taimara village in Ranchi district, Jharkhand, India, where the Kanchi River drops 44 metres (144 ft) over a cliff at the edge of the Ranchi plateau. The water falls in several white channels over large, blocky tan and grey rocks, with a strong column on the upper left and thinner streams spreading across dark, wet rock faces. It gathers in a greenish pool at the base on the lower left.

The area was home to Mundari tribes for centuries , who gave the waterfall its name . In the 20th century , the site became more accessible to visitors while the surrounding environment remained largely natural .

The name derives from the Mundari Da:song, where da: means water and song means pouring or measuring, because the fall looks like water being poured. The site is also called Dassam Garh. Hindi speakers link the name to the ten (das) streams some say form as the water drops.

Dassam Falls lies 40 kilometres from Ranchi on NH 33, now NH-18, the Ranchi-Jamshedpur highway, near Taimara village in Bundu subdivision. The water is clean and clear, but the current generated at the base makes bathing or swimming dangerous; nine people drowned here between 2001 and 2006. Visit during or shortly after the monsoon, when the Kanchi River carries the most water.

During rainy season , the water divides into roughly ten separate streams flowing parallel down the rock face . This division changes with water levels and creates different patterns across the width of the falls .
