Dakshin Dinajpur district, Administrative district in West Bengal, India
Dakshin Dinajpur is an administrative district in West Bengal comprising two subdivisions, Balurghat and Gangarampur, situated within the Malda division. The region spreads across fertile plains watered by rivers including the Atreyee and Purnabhaba that shape its landscape.
The district was created on 1 April 1992 when the larger Dinajpur district was divided into separate administrative units. Balurghat became the administrative capital and has remained the main center of governance since its establishment.
The population of 1.6 million residents celebrates major festivals throughout the year, with Bengali as the primary language alongside Santali, Kurukh, and Hindi dialects.
The area is primarily shaped by agriculture, with extensive rice fields, jute cultivation, and vegetable farming spread across villages. The terrain is relatively flat and easy to navigate, with good connectivity between the two subdivisions.
A university was established in this region in 2021 to provide higher education to local students. This institution has significantly changed the educational landscape of the district.
