Before joining Maharashtra in 1960, the district operated under Hyderabad State administration and contained notable structures including protective walls and city gates.
The population of 2.5 million people primarily speaks Marathi, with Hinduism representing 84 percent and Islam 12 percent of religious practices.
The district divides into eleven administrative regions called tehsils, including Beed, Ashti, Gevrai, Ambajogai, Kaij, Parali, Majalgaon, Patoda, Shirur Kasar, Wadwani, and Dharur.
