Ahmednagar Fort

Ahmednagar Fort is a military fortification in Ahilyanagar, India, featuring a circular layout with walls rising 18 meters (59 feet) high. The structure is supported by 22 bastions and has a perimeter of 1.7 kilometers (1.1 miles), surrounded by a moat.

Ahmad Nizam Shah I commissioned the construction in 1490 as a strategic military base during the founding of the Nizam Shahi dynasty in Maharashtra. The fortification played a central role in controlling the region throughout the following centuries.

During the pre-independence era, the compound served as a prison where Jawaharlal Nehru wrote 'The Discovery of India'. Other leaders of the freedom struggle were also detained here.

The compound remains under the administration of the Indian Army through its Armoured Corps, so visitors need special permission to enter. It is advisable to contact authorities in advance to clarify visiting arrangements.

Beneath the compound lies an intricate network of underground chambers and tunnels that were used for military operations and emergency escapes. These hidden passages formed a complex system for defense and evacuation.
