Faizabad, Historical city in Ayodhya district, India
Faizabad is a city in Ayodhya district in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, just a few kilometers from the historical city of Ayodhya. The settlement extends along the southern bank of the Saryu river and features narrow lanes, courtyards, and open squares.
The city was founded in the mid-18th century and served as the first capital of the Nawabs of Awadh before the move to Lucknow. The rule of the Nawabs left behind grand tombs and gardens that remain visible today.
The name derives from Nawab Faizullah Khan and recalls the founding of the city in the 18th century. Mosques and temples stand in the same neighborhoods, while markets and courtyards are used by families of both faiths.
The visit is best outside the hot summer months, when temperatures are milder and walking becomes more comfortable. Main roads are well accessible, while smaller alleys should be explored on foot.
The tomb of Bahu Begum features one of the tallest domed roofs in the region and was built without supporting pillars inside. This construction method was technically demanding for the time and reflects the craftsmanship of the architects.
