Pathanamthitta, Administrative town in Kerala, India
Pathanamthitta is an administrative town in Kerala, India, positioned at the meeting point of the Pamba, Achankovil, and Manimala rivers. These three waterways form a natural network running through the surrounding region.
The area became a separate district in 1982, combining parts of Kollam, Alappuzha, and Idukki districts. Administrator K. K. Nair led the organization of the new district structure.
The name comes from Malayalam words meaning array of houses by the riverside, reflecting the location along the Achankovil River banks. Residents use the waterways for daily transport and connection between neighborhoods.
The nearest railway connection is in Chengannur, about 24 kilometers from the center. Local public transport connects the town with surrounding settlements and river crossings.
The district administration works through five Deputy Collectors who coordinate areas such as revenue collection and land acquisition. This division allows decentralized management of the expansive district area.
