Silent Valley National Park

Silent Valley National Park encompasses 89 square kilometers of tropical rainforest within the Nilgiri hills, featuring diverse flora and fauna species.

The area received protection status in 1984 following successful environmental protests against proposed hydroelectric power projects threatening local ecosystems.

Indigenous Mudugar and Irula communities maintain traditional connections to the forest lands surrounding the national park boundaries.

Visitors must obtain permits from the forest department at Mannarkkad before entering the park, with November through March offering optimal weather conditions.

The park earned its name from the notable absence of cicada insects, which typically produce loud sounds in other tropical forests.
