Mukurthi National Park

Mukurthi National Park is a protected area in the Nilgiri Mountains that covers high-altitude terrain with steep slopes and grassy plateaus. The park contains varied zones, from dense forests in lower areas to open grasslands in higher elevations, creating a landscape that changes as you move through it.

The park was established in 2001 to protect endangered animals like the Nilgiri Tahr in their natural home. Its creation was an important step to shield these delicate mountain ecosystems from further damage.

The land holds deep meaning for local communities who have lived in these highlands for generations, maintaining a close relationship with the natural world around them. This traditional way of life continues to shape how people view and protect the mountain landscape today.

The best time to visit is during the dry months from September to November and February to May, when trails are accessible and conditions are more comfortable. The location is in a mountainous region, so bring proper footwear and prepare for cool, high-altitude weather.

The area contains a specialized grassland found only on a few mountain plateaus in this region, thriving under extreme conditions. These open meadows formed naturally over thousands of years and remain largely unchanged today.
