Adam's Fountain was completed in 1886 as a memorial to a Governor of Ooty, paid for by public subscription at a cost of between Rs. 13,000 and Rs. 14,000. It was first planned for the Ooty market, then placed before the District Collector's office, but that site lacked the water head the fountain needed. It was moved to Charing Cross in 1898, and a melanoxylon tree long used as a landmark there was felled to make room.

The fountain displays British architectural choices that arrived in Ooty during colonial times and serves as a gathering point for visitors. Over generations, local residents and travelers have recognized it as a social hub in the town.

The fountain is accessible around the clock and sits near the town's central area. Visitors should come at different times of day to see varying light patterns and water flows.

After dark, the structure is highlighted through specialized lighting that emphasizes its carved surfaces. This light display gives the fountain an entirely different appearance at night.
