British forces destroyed the palace built by King Khagemba during the Anglo-Manipur War. Today only a few fragments of the original structure remain.
Ima Keithel market is run entirely by women and is considered one of the largest of its kind in Asia. Vendors sell textiles, fresh vegetables and handmade products in long rows of covered stalls.
National highways connect the city to other major centers in the region. Bir Tikendrajit International Airport offers regular flights to Kolkata and Guwahati.
Khuman Lampak Main Stadium now serves as a center for modern sports events. The region is however recognized as the birthplace of polo several centuries ago.
