Dibrugarh, Administrative center in Assam, India
Dibrugarh is an administrative city in the northeastern state of Assam, India, stretching along the banks of the Brahmaputra and serving as a gateway to the region. The city connects wide avenues with residential neighborhoods, commercial zones, and green spaces crossed by river channels and canals.
British traders established tea plantations here in the 19th century, transforming the area into a center for tea cultivation that still shapes the economy today. The city later developed into a hub for river trade and oil extraction in nearby Digboi.
Dibrugarh earns its nickname as the Tea City of India because surrounding plantations produce a mild and aromatic black tea valued worldwide. Visitors often see workers picking tea leaves by hand and can sample different varieties in tasting rooms.
Mohanbari Airport sits about 15 km (9 miles) from the city center and offers flights to several major Indian cities. Railway and bus stations are located close together, allowing travelers to switch easily between different modes of transport.
The Brahmaputra River reverses its flow direction during the monsoon season and regularly floods the riverbanks, reshaping the landscape each year. Some bridges and ferries were specifically designed to withstand the strong water level rises.
