Paschim Medinipur district, Administrative district in West Bengal, India
Paschim Medinipur covers a large part of western West Bengal and is divided into three administrative subdivisions: Kharagpur, Medinipur Sadar, and Ghatal. The land changes from rich agricultural plains in the east to areas with reddish laterite soil in the west.
The administrative region was created on the first of January 2002 when the former Midnapore district was split into two separate parts. The western half became this district, while the eastern portion formed Purba Medinipur.
Local residents celebrate major Bengali festivals throughout the year, with Durga Puja celebrations drawing large gatherings across the three subdivisions.
The administrative center in Medinipur city sits in a central location and is reachable by main highways. Visitors planning to see the three subdivisions should expect longer travel times, as distances across the area are considerable.
The first Indian Institute of Technology in the country was founded in Kharagpur and remains one of India's leading technical schools today. The institution attracts students and researchers from across the nation.
