Purulia is a municipality in West Bengal located in the state's westernmost region at an elevation of 227 meters. It functions as the administrative center of the district, coordinating local governance through multiple blocks and municipal divisions.
The area was part of Banga, one of the 16 ancient Mahajanapadas, and received its current administrative structure in 1956 following the partition of Manbhum. This reorganization fundamentally shaped the region's modern identity.
The municipality preserves the traditional Chhau dance form, with elaborate masks handcrafted by artisans in nearby villages. This performance style remains central to local celebrations and artistic life.
