Hundru Falls, Waterfall in Ranchi district, India
Hundru Falls is a waterfall on the Subarnarekha River in Ranchi district, Jharkhand, where the river drops sharply off a plateau edge and splits into two main streams. Several smaller flows run alongside the two main channels, spreading across the rocky face below.
Local tribal communities knew this waterfall long before it appeared on colonial maps, using the surrounding forest for food and resources. Later, regional authorities developed access paths and added viewing platforms to open the site to wider visitors.
The name Hundru is thought to come from a local word referring to the sound made by falling water, which visitors can clearly hear before they even see the falls. On weekends, families and groups from Ranchi gather here to eat together and spend time near the cascades, making it a popular day out.
The falls carry the most water from July to October, during and just after the monsoon season, which is when most visitors come. Footwear with a good grip is worth wearing, as the rocks near the water tend to be slippery.
Even in the dry season, the falls never run completely dry because the Subarnarekha draws water from a wide plateau catchment upstream. Visitors who arrive early in the morning can see a fine mist sitting low over the rocks at the base before the sun burns it off.
