Venkatagiri, town in Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh, India
Venkatagiri is a town in Andhra Pradesh located between two rivers, the Kaivalya and the Godderu. The town contains old temples like Kashi Vishwanath and Ramalingeswra Swami, while local markets, shops, and busy roads connect its different sections.
Before the 17th century, the town was known as Kalimilli and was ruled by the Vijayanagar Empire. Recherla Venkatadri Naidu took control in the 17th century, and his family made Venkatagiri their main seat, transforming it into a small kingdom.
Venkatagiri is known for its handloom sarees made from cotton and silk with fine metal threads woven into the fabric. The weaving craft is passed down through families, and you can see looms in homes and small shops where artisans work on colorful textiles.
The town is accessible by train through Venkatagiri and Nidigallu stations or by bus from nearby towns like Gudur. Local markets and shops serve daily needs, while the warmer months should be avoided due to heat and humidity.
The Poleramma jatara festival is celebrated annually in honor of the goddess Poleramma with processions and offerings. This festival reveals how deep religious traditions remain alive in the town's daily life.
