Ambattur, Industrial neighborhood in Chennai, India.
Ambattur is a neighborhood in northwestern Chennai, Tamil Nadu, that extends across a wide area bordering Avadi, Anna Nagar, and Korattur. The area is shaped by both residential sections and industrial zones that spread along broad roads, giving the neighborhood a busy, functional character.
The area was originally a farming village around Ambattur Lake and developed into an industrial center after World War II. The arrival of the TI Cycle factory marked the start of this transformation, which fundamentally changed the neighborhood and attracted new residents.
The name comes from Tamil and refers to the fifty-first temple village. Many residents visit local temples and celebrate traditional festivals like Pongal, which honors the harvest, and Diwali, the festival of lights in autumn.
Access is provided by Ambattur Railway Station, which connects to Chennai's suburban network, along with numerous bus routes. Visitors should note that the neighborhood is busiest during the day, when factories and shops are open and traffic becomes lively.
The industrial estate from 1964 covers an area where around eighteen hundred small-scale enterprises have settled. This makes it one of the largest business parks in South Asia and a key economic driver for the entire region.
