Kalyani, Urban development district near Kolkata, India
Kalyani is a planned settlement in Nadia district of West Bengal, situated about 48 kilometers north of Kolkata along the eastern bank of the Hooghly. Wide roads lined with trees run through the area and connect residential neighborhoods with educational facilities and green spaces.
The site served as an American military airfield during World War II under the name Roosevelt Town. Bengali chief minister Bidhan Chandra Roy converted it into a planned town in 1951 and renamed it Kalyani.
The town takes its name from an Indian word reflecting welfare and influence of teaching centers in Bengal. Many students live here and shape the everyday rhythm through their presence on the streets.
The Kalyani Expressway and the Sealdah-Ranaghat railway line connect the place regularly with Kolkata for daily commuting. Visitors find most services along the main roads and near the university buildings.
Underground sewerage systems were laid at the time of the town's foundation in the early 1950s, which was uncommon for Indian cities of that era. The avenue structure follows a pattern applied in few other new settlements across India at the time.
