Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, Railway workshop in Chittaranjan, India
Chittaranjan Locomotive Works is a railway workshop in Salanpur in eastern India that produces electric locomotives for the entire rail network of the country. The site covers a large industrial area with multiple manufacturing halls, testing bays, and assembly lines where locomotives take shape from raw steel to finished machines.
The Indian railway administration founded this factory in 1950 to build locomotives domestically rather than importing them from Britain. The first locomotive produced here was handed to the nation on November 1st that same year, just a few years after independence.
The facility bears the name of Chittaranjan Das, a Bengali activist whose legacy embodies the early vision of independent India for industrial self-reliance. Workers and their families occupy the surrounding residential quarters, creating a township that has grown entirely around the workshops.
The factory sits roughly 32 kilometers from Asansol and can be reached via the main roads of the region. Visitors need to arrange permission beforehand, as this is an active production site where work continues throughout the day.
The factory completed over 400 locomotives in a single year, making it the largest production site of its kind worldwide. Each machine goes through numerous tests on dedicated tracks within the grounds before leaving the site and entering service across India.
