Bakkhali, human settlement in India

Bakkhali is a coastal village in the Namkhana block, in the southern tip of West Bengal, facing the Bay of Bengal. The settlement mixes residential areas with fishing facilities and agricultural plots, all sitting on a flat shoreline bordered by mangrove forests.

The village grew from fishing communities that settled along this stretch of coastline and shaped their way of life around the sea. Its profile rose when Henry Island, a nearby beach destination, began attracting visitors and brought more attention to this part of the coast.

In Bakkhali, you can watch fishermen sorting nets on the shore and preparing boats early in the morning. The daily rhythm of the village follows the tides, and most families here have lived from the sea for generations.

Bakkhali is reachable by local roads and sits close to Henry Island, so both places can easily be visited together. The coastal climate is hot and humid for much of the year, so light clothing and protection for cameras and bags from salt air is worth considering.

The village sits at the edge of the Sundarbans delta, home to the Bengal tiger, and the mangrove line here marks a boundary between the inhabited coast and that protected forest. Early in the morning, river dolphins are occasionally spotted in the waters near the river mouths at the edge of the village.
