Dhankar Gompa, Buddhist temple in Spiti Valley, India
The Dhankar Monastery stands at 3,894 meters above sea level, featuring multiple levels carved into a mountain cliff in the Spiti Valley.
Built in the 7th century, the monastery functioned as a fort-monastery complex protecting the Spiti Valley and connecting trade routes between Tibet and India.
The monastery houses a collection of ancient Buddhist manuscripts, traditional Thangka paintings, and meditation halls where Buddhist ceremonies take place throughout the year.
Visitors can reach Dhankar Monastery via a 10-kilometer road from Kaza, with accommodation available in the new monastery building during summer months.
The monastery contains a meditation chamber with glass windows providing views across the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers.
