Dhankar Gompa

Dhankar Gompa is a monastery complex in Spiti Valley perched above 3,800 meters on a steep clifftside, with buildings carved directly into the rock face. The site contains multiple levels connected by narrow passages that house prayer halls, living quarters, and meditation rooms throughout its structure.

Founded around the 7th century, this monastery served as a protective fortress for the valley and as an administrative hub for the region. Its clifftop location allowed it to monitor trade passages connecting Tibet to the plains below.

The monastery holds ancient Buddhist manuscripts and traditional Thangka paintings that visitors can see during ceremonies and meditation sessions. Daily monastic rituals here reflect the spiritual practices that shape the region's religious life.

Access is via a mountain road from Kaza, and sturdy footwear plus time to adjust to the high altitude are essential before visiting. Lodging is available in the newer monastic building during warmer months, so plan your visit accordingly to explore the site comfortably.

A special meditation chamber features large windows framing views of where the Spiti and Pin rivers meet below. This rare setting for contemplation was designed so that the surrounding landscape becomes part of the spiritual practice.
