Tabo Monastery, Himachal Pradesh

The monastery complex includes nine temples, twenty-three chortens, a monks chamber, and multiple extensions across 6300 square meters of mountainous terrain.

Founded in 996 CE by Buddhist translator Rinchen Zangpo under King Yeshe-O of Guge, Tabo Monastery remains the oldest operating Buddhist center in India.

The temple walls display extensive frescoes, manuscripts, and thangkas that illustrate Buddhist teachings and depict tales from the Mahayana Buddhist Pantheon.

Located at 3,050 meters altitude, the monastery opens daily at 6 AM for morning chants and houses the Serkong School for local education.

The monastery contains meditation caves carved into surrounding cliffs where monks practice traditional Buddhist rituals in complete isolation.
