Reo Purgyil, Mountain peak in Kinnaur district, India.
Reo Purgyil is the highest peak in Himachal Pradesh, rising 6,816 meters at the southern end of the Zanskar Range. Its distinctive dome shape towers above the Sutlej River valley and defines the landscape of Kinnaur district.
The first documented ascent occurred in 1971 when an Indo-Tibetan Border Police team reached the summit, marking a turning point in Indian mountaineering. This achievement opened the way for future expeditions to this remote high-altitude region.
The name translates to Rock Demon in the local language, showing how deeply this peak connects to the stories and beliefs of people living in the region. Villages at its base shape their identity around this towering neighbor.
Expeditions typically take place from June through September when weather permits safe climbing. Access to the mountain routes begins from Kaza village, which serves as the main staging point for climbers preparing their ascent.
The peak frequently disappears under clouds, which makes it challenging to reach but also creates dramatic views of western Tibetan valleys when the weather clears. Climbers often speak of how this unpredictable nature adds to the mountain's mysterious character.
