Yamunotri Temple, Hindu temple in Uttarkashi district, India.
Yamunotri is a Hindu temple at 3,291 meters elevation in the western Garhwal Himalayas, housing a black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna. The complex includes several smaller shrines and a natural hot spring located directly beside the main structure.
The original shrine was built in the 19th century by a regional ruler from Tehri Garhwal. Subsequent reconstructions became necessary as heavy snowfall and floods repeatedly damaged the structure.
The shrine marks the source of the Yamuna, one of India's holiest rivers, and pilgrims bring raw food to cook in the hot spring water. The cooked offerings are then carried home as consecrated food and shared within families.
The pilgrimage season runs from May to October, as the site remains closed during winter due to snowfall. Trekkers should start early in the morning to allow enough time for the ascent and return before nightfall.
Pilgrims traditionally prepare rice and potatoes in Surya Kund by tying them in cloth bags and placing them in the boiling spring water. The heat of the spring comes from geothermal activity deep beneath the Himalayan rock.
