Bhrigupanth, Mountain summit in Bhatwari, India
Bhrigupanth is a mountain summit in the Garhwal Himalaya standing at 6,772 meters, positioned northeast of Thalay Sagar and northwest of Meru Peak. The peak rises above snow fields and glacial terrain that define this portion of the Uttarakhand mountain range.
The peak was first documented during an Indian-American Women's expedition in 1980 that achieved the first recorded successful ascent to its summit. This climb marked the beginning of wider international attention to this section of the Garhwal range.
The mountain sits within a landscape deeply connected to Hindu pilgrimage routes and the sacred significance of the nearby Gangotri temple. Visitors in this region encounter numerous sacred sites and ritual spaces that shape how locals and pilgrims move through the mountains.
Access to Bhrigupanth begins from the Gangotri base camp, reached after several days of trekking through alpine terrain with varying weather conditions. Summer months offer the most favorable conditions for those attempting the climb due to reduced snow coverage and more stable weather patterns.
The mountain drops 1,028 meters of prominence from its neighbors and ranks as the 38th highest peak in Uttarakhand. This combination of height and relief makes it a distinct landmark within the region despite lower visibility compared to neighboring giants.
