Kharchakund, Mountain summit in Uttarkashi district, India.
Kharchakund is a high mountain in the Gangotri region that reaches 6,612 meters in elevation. Glaciers cover much of its northern and eastern slopes, while the western side opens toward different terrain.
The peak was first climbed in 1980 when Japanese mountaineers reached the summit via the west ridge route. This ascent marked an early mountaineering achievement in the Gangotri area.
The mountain forms part of the sacred Garhwal Himalaya range, where traditional communities maintain connections with the mountainous landscape through their practices.
Climbers need to be properly acclimatized and have advanced mountaineering abilities, plus they must obtain permits from local authorities before attempting the ascent. Hiring experienced guides and bringing suitable high-altitude gear is necessary for the climb.
The peak sits under strict climbing regulations and sees fewer visitors than other summits nearby, keeping it less crowded and more isolated from heavy tourism. This seclusion preserves the mountain environment in a relatively undisturbed state.
