Haathi Parvat, Mountain summit in Joshimath Tehsil, India
Haathi Parvat is a mountain summit in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, rising to around 6,700 meters. It sits in a remote area surrounded by high valleys and alpine meadows, reached mainly by experienced climbers.
The first recorded ascent of the peak was completed in 1963 by an Indian expedition. Since then, the mountain has drawn climbers from across India and beyond, though it has never become a heavily trafficked route.
The name Haathi Parvat means "Elephant Mountain" in Hindi, because the peak's outline resembles a resting elephant when seen from the valley below. Travelers who look up from the right angle can often make out this shape against the sky.
The approach typically starts from Govindghat and passes through Bhyundar Valley on a long trekking route. Conditions are most stable before and after the monsoon season, when the trails are safer and easier to follow.
A large landslide in 2017 blocked the national highway near the mountain and cut off pilgrimage routes used by many travelers passing through the area. The event showed how quickly the terrain in this part of the Himalayas can shift without warning.
