Gopinath Mandir, Hindu temple in Gopeshwar, Chamoli District, India.
Gopinath Mandir is a Hindu temple in Gopeshwar, in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is built in stone and decorated with carvings and sculptures spread across its outer walls and inner chambers.
The temple was built between the 9th and 11th centuries under the Katyuri dynasty, a period when many stone temples were raised across this part of the Himalayas. The Katyuris were known patrons of temple construction throughout what is now Uttarakhand.
The temple serves as a spiritual center where visitors observe daily worship and seasonal celebrations throughout the year. Local people consider this place essential to their religious life and community identity.
Gopeshwar sits in the mountains and can only be reached by road, so allow plenty of travel time from any larger town. Once in the village, the temple is easy to reach on foot from the town center.
A tall trident stands in the temple courtyard, forged from eight different metals and engraved with inscriptions dating to the 13th century. The exact method used to combine those metals has never been fully explained.
