Sapta Badri, Hindu temple complex in Uttarakhand, India
Sapta Badri is a temple complex of seven shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu, stretched across the Alaknanda River valley. They span about 24 kilometers between Badrinath and Nandprayag, creating a series of sacred sites along the riverbed.
Adi Badri, the oldest temple, is believed to be where Vishnu performed worship during three ancient epochs. The remaining shrines were built across different periods, together forming a network of religious centers that developed over centuries.
Each temple in the complex honors a different form of Vishnu worship, from meditation practices to prophecies about future times. Pilgrims visit them in sequence to explore various spiritual dimensions of this deity.
The temples are accessible via the Badrinath-Rishikesh National Highway, with Pandukeshwar serving as a central hub for several shrines. The best time to visit is between May and October, when roads are open and weather remains mild.
Bhavishya Badri was designated as a future worship center meant to serve as a replacement when other temples become inaccessible due to geographical changes. This arrangement reflects believers' trust in the long-term continuity of pilgrimage at this site.
