Abi Gamin, Himalayan mountain peak in Chamoli district, India
Abi Gamin is a mountain peak located near the Indo-Tibetan border in northern India, rising to approximately 7,355 meters. The summit sits about 2 kilometers northeast of Kamet peak in Uttarakhand, dominating the landscape of this remote region.
The mountain was first surveyed and documented by Richard Strachey in 1848. The Schlagintweit brothers contributed systematic mapping of the range in 1855.
The mountain stands at the watershed between the upper Alaknanda and Dhauli rivers, near Manna and Niti passes, marking traditional trade routes between India and Tibet.
Climbers reach this summit via multiple routes, including the northeast ridge over Mana Pass and the Purbi Kamet Glacier route. The climbing season is brief, with the best conditions occurring during the warmer months when snow and weather are most stable.
In 1988, Govind Joshi reached the summit at age 17 as the youngest climber, climbing without supplemental oxygen. This remarkable achievement shows that this remote peak can be attained by determined young mountaineers.
