Raj Bhavan

Raj Bhavan is the official residence of the Governor in Dehradun and comprises multiple colonial-style buildings located at about 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) elevation on the mountainside of northern India. The complex contains around 90 rooms across multiple floors, with various formal spaces designed for different administrative and ceremonial purposes.

The residence was built during the British colonial period, when it served as a summer retreat for British administrators seeking cooler climate at higher elevation. After India's independence, it became the official home of the state governor, continuing its role as a center of power in the region.

The building blends British colonial architectural style with regional Indian design traditions, visible in its grand halls and formal reception areas. This combination shows how two different building styles came together during a period of transition.

Entry requires advance permission from state authorities, so plan your visit ahead rather than arriving without notice. Tours are available only on certain days and times, so checking beforehand ensures you can actually explore the property.

Several suites within the residence are named after notable figures from Indian history, turning the spaces into a tribute to these important people. This personal naming gives each room a story that goes beyond its simple function.
