Bara Shigri Glacier, Glacier complex in Lahaul and Spiti, India
Bara Shigri is a large glacier system covering the northern slopes of the Pir Panjal Range in Himachal Pradesh. The ice mass extends across high elevations and displays dark debris cover in lower sections, while cleaner white ice becomes visible at higher altitudes.
In 1836, this glacier created a natural dam on the Chenab River and impounded a large lake. The dam later collapsed and caused severe flooding across the downstream valleys.
Local communities near the glacier monitor water levels and maintain traditional warning systems to protect downstream settlements from potential glacial flooding.
Access requires sturdy footwear and acclimatization to high altitude, as the glacier sits in harsh, alpine conditions. Visitors should expect unpredictable weather and be ready for rapid shifts from clear skies to thick fog.
Deposits of antimony ore occur in this region and represent one of the rare locations of this strategic mineral in India. This geological feature shows how the mountains hold more than just ice and rock.
