Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Mountaineering training institute in Manali, India.
The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports is a mountaineering school based in Manali, Himachal Pradesh, with additional centers in Dharamshala and Narkanda. Each center is set up to match the terrain of its location and runs programs in mountaineering, skiing, and water sports.
The institute was founded in 1961 as one of the first mountaineering schools in the western Himalayas, at a time when organized climbing training in India was still rare. It received its current name in 2008 in honor of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The institute teaches climbing techniques adapted to the western Himalayas and places strong emphasis on treating the mountains with care. Visitors can notice how this approach shapes daily training routines and the attitude of everyone on site.
Programs run for beginners through to experienced climbers, but the activities offered depend on the season and the weather at each center. Checking what is available at the specific location you plan to visit before making the trip is a good idea.
The institute runs specialized rescue teams that respond to emergencies across Himachal Pradesh and also trains professional emergency responders in disaster management. This side of the work goes largely unnoticed by most visitors who come for the climbing and skiing courses.
