Gupteswar Cave, Hindu temple in Malkangiri, Odisha, India
Gupteswar Cave is a limestone temple situated within a natural cave, with a wide entrance opening into the rocky formation. Inside lies a natural Shiva Linga, the focal point of worship within this sacred space.
A hunter discovered this cave in the 17th century and reported it to a local ruler, who subsequently established formal religious practices there. This discovery marked the beginning of its recognition as an important place of worship.
The shrine draws pilgrims particularly during Shravan, when devotees undertake barefoot journeys carrying decorated bamboo palanquins as an act of devotion. This annual pilgrimage remains a central practice that connects people to their spiritual beliefs.
A stairway lined with trees on both sides leads up to the cave entrance. The best time to visit is between November and March, when the climate is more pleasant for the climb.
Pilgrims gather in an adjacent cave beneath a stalactite formation where water drips, which is considered sacred. This mineral formation is connected to a legendary divine cow in local tradition.
