Korlai Fort, Portuguese fortress in Raigad district, India.

Korlai Fort is a Portuguese fortress in Raigad district that stretches across a rocky headland above the Kundalika River's southern bank. The site features defensive walls, multiple bastions, and military buildings arranged across different levels of the terrain.

Portuguese forces built this fortress in 1521 to guard their trading posts along India's western coast. The stronghold remained in Portuguese hands until 1739, when Maratha forces seized control of the settlement.

A chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Good Voyage sits within the fort grounds, reflecting how Portuguese faith shaped life in this coastal settlement. Visitors can still see the prayer spaces and religious markings that connected residents to their homeland across the sea.

Bring your own water and food when visiting, as the site lacks modern conveniences or services. The terrain is uneven and steep, so wear sturdy shoes and prepare for a physically demanding walk through the ruins.

Three stone inscriptions carved into the fort's walls preserve orders from a Portuguese Viceroy, offering rare written proof of how the outpost was governed. Visitors can read these ancient commands directly carved into the stone.
