Birwadi Fort, Hill fort in Raigad district, India
The fortress rises 1200 feet above sea level, featuring four corner bastions, a main gate, and multiple stone water cisterns across its grounds.
Built in 1648 by Shivaji Maharaj, the fort changed ownership several times, from Ahmadnagar to Portugal, the Maratha Confederacy, and the British East India Company.
This military structure reflects Maharashtra's defensive architecture, with its strategic position designed to monitor activities along the Revdanda creek.
Visitors need to undertake a 45-minute walk from the Devi temple at Birwadi village, with accommodations available at the local government school.
The fort contains small water tanks carved into rocks along its fortifications, distinguishing it from other regional forts that typically display inscriptions and carvings.
