Parumala Church

Parumala Church is a circular building designed by architect Charles Correa with space for around 2000 worshippers and an inner diameter of approximately 39 meters (128 feet). The design creates an open, welcoming interior where visitors can see the entire altar area from most seats.

The church was founded in 1895 when a two-acre plot was donated by Arikupurathu Mathen Karnavar to serve both religious purposes and seminary education. This dual purpose shaped the development of the site over the following decades.

The main altar displays an icon painting that ranks among the largest in the Malankara tradition, featuring biblical figures like Christ and the Theotokos rendered in Orthodox style. These sacred images hold deep spiritual significance for worshippers who gather here.

The church welcomes visitors year-round and functions as the administrative center for the Niranam Diocese under Bishop Yuhanon Mar Chrysostomos. Visitors should dress respectfully and be prepared to observe quiet behavior during active services.

The church houses the tomb of Saint Gregorios of Parumala, who was the first Indian Orthodox saint to be canonized. His veneration draws pilgrims from different religious traditions who come to pay their respects.
