The panchayat's name comes from the old Malayalam word edathavalam, a resting place for the king's men and traders travelling the Pamba by boat. The annual Edathua Perunnal, the feast of St. George from 27 April to 14 May, draws families from Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari District.
